For my next entry in the add a caption series we have a picture I took a few months ago called ‘Blue Nights’. Like many of my favorite portraits, this one and its companions were quite unplanned and spontaneous. The photo is just as it came out of the camera, there’s no Photoshop or Lightroom sorcery involved here. Just Kate rocking out with some blue LED lights.
It was rather late in the evening when Kate, Sarah and I were playing with portraits, when suddenly we got the idea to do some pictures with a strand of blue LED Christmas lights lying around. Since they were LED, the lights weren’t hot and very bright. Kate wrapped herself up in a strand, we turned off the other lights, and we took a whole mess of pictures. This one is probably the best to come out of the shoot. Kate and Sarah are great to take pictures with because they’re always coming up with great poses and ideas.
I was using my absolute favorite lens, the incomparable Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 AF-D and the Nikon D90. Program exposure wanted to overexpose the image because of the dark areas, so I set exposure compensation a few stops down. My picture profile was a custom portrait profile that I had been using all night that worked surprisingly well with a completely different type of portrait.
Enjoy and thanks for reading!

New photos up on my flickr account! I took most of these at sundown in Cincinnati. It was raining and I had my trusty 50mm AF-D f1.8 so I was able to get some neat blue colors. Enjoy!
